NATIONAL cyclists took the top six finishes in the open category of the second series of the National Cycling Championship yesterday,
Racing under the banner of Bro’s Cycling Project Team, Abdul Hardie Morsidi (3:17:17.119), Ahamad Rifa’ie Hj Johor (3:17:17.528), Reduan Yusop (3:17:25), Azmi Abd Hadziz (3:18:34), Mohd I’maadi Abdul Aziz (3:21:27) and Mohd Zaim Baha (3:21:47) helped their team displace Cannasia Cycling Team from the top of the standings.
Cannasia Cycling Team finished second yesterday and Jati Racing Team A third, with the former currently second overall in the 24-team open category and the latter third.
Bro’s Cycling Project Team also won the Pehin Dato Awang Haji Yahya Cup yesterday as the second series was organised in conjunction with the one-day event which used to be held separately.
Bro’s Cycling Project Team received a cash prize of $600, Cannasia Cycling Team won $500 and Jati Racing Team A was awarded $400 for winning the Cup.
Abdul Hardie won $1000 for finishing first in the individual category, with Ahamad Rifa’ie winning $800 for finishing second and Reduan taking home $600 for third.
“I’m happy that our national cyclists grabbed the top six positions, and even without my full supervision… They went all out and showed they can still perform,” said national coach Yafiz Jamaludin in an interview with The Brunei Times after the race which started and finished at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.
“It was too bad about I’maadi’s performance. A slight miscalculation in his strategy made him miss the top three positions, but it doesn’t bother me and it was a very good learning experience for him.
“I know he will learn from the mistake and he will be a much better rider because of this,” added the Malaysian.
There were over 140 cyclists at yesterday’s event, with Mohd Aziz Abdul Aziz coming in first in the junior category with a time of 1:07:32.
Ahmad Jawaahir Hj Johor was second (1:10:16) and Mohd Hamizan Hj Herman third (1:10:17).
The Beginner’s category was narrowly won by Mohd Azwar Mohd Hairolrani with a time of 50:52, while Abdul Waie Seri Puspa achieved a time of 50:54.162 for second and Mohammad Fadhli Hj Rosli was third with a time of 50:54.584.
Speaking to The Brunei Times, BDCF also praised the six national cyclists for their performance.
“The association is very pleased that our national cyclists achieved the top six positions in the open category. It doesn’t get any better than that,” said BDCF assistant secretary general Hj Mohd Ruzaimi Hj Rosli.
“It shows that Brunei cyclists have the motivation, talent and technical skill to go far. They just need that extra push and support,” he added.
Hj Mohd Ruzaimi also expressed his thanks to the association’s patron, the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, for his endless contribution and support.
“Alhamdulilah, the turnout for this year’s Pehin Dato Awang Hj Yahya Cup is a lot better than we expected,” he said.
“It was a smart idea for the association to merge the Pehin Dato Awang Haji Yahya Cup with the National Cycling Championship series.
“Everything went smoothly today, especially with Pehin Dato Awang Hj Yahya’s involvement and the Royal Brunei Police Force’s help in coordinating traffic and the safety of our participants. “We can’t thank them enough for their valuable help.”
The third series will be held on August 10.
