NATIONAL cyclists Mohd Rafiuddin Zikara and Mohd Nurjamri Johari dominated the Malar Setia Mountain Bike Challenge after winning first and second place in the Men’s Elite group for the Cross Country Circuit (XCC) and the Cross Country Olympic (XCO) categories yesterday.
Riding for Laila Manja Cycling Team (LMCT), Mohd Rafiuddin won first place in the XCO by clocking a time of 1:22:18, with Mohd Nurjamri for Chiru Team following closely behind with a time of 1:22:20.
Third place went to Azmi Abd Hadzid of Bro Cycling Project (BCP) with a time of 1:30:01.
Their roles were reversed in the XCC category which Mohd Nurjamri won first with a time of 37:21.10 and Mohd Rafiuddin earned second with his time of 39:17.46.
Azmi from BCP managed to grab third again by clocking 39:26.90.
Speaking to The Brunei Times after the event, Mohd Nurjamri talked about how technically hard racing on the XCO track at the Bukit Ambok track in front of the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Tutong Hospital was.
He also mentioned that the competition was used to gauge his skills and prepare for an upcoming tournament.
“The last race (XCO Men’s Open Elite) had a rough and technical track. There were a lot of steep slopes so it made it harder for us to manage our pacing. Also your hands get numb because of the constant vibration while we’re steering our bike." said Mohd Nurjamri.
“My big goal for this year is to qualify for the ASEAN Mountain Bike Cup which will be held in ten days. The first stage will be in Philippines and the second stage will be in Sabah.
“For the first stage, it will just be me representing Brunei. But for the second stage, it will be me and Mohd Rafiuddin to represent the country,”
When asked why is Mohd Rafiuddin won’t be joining Mohd Nurjamri for the first stage in Philippines, Mohd Rafiuddin mentioned that he has another race to compete in before going to the ASEAN Mountain Bike Cup.
“For me though, the ASEAN Cup is on my mind but my next race will be the Bekam MTB race in Miri on June 15.” said Mohd Rafiuddin
“I’ve won top podium in the Miri race for the past four years. So yes, I will be looking to win it again this year.”
“After posting such good results, I think we’re almost ready for our tournaments and competitions soon,” he concluded.
For the XCC Masters category, Ali Mustapha Hj Abd Hamid of Kedayan Cycling Team (KCT) finished first with 33:59.63, with G530 Team grabbing second through Alexander Mercelo Polistico Senones with 35:31.45 and third place with Hj Ali Sofian Hj Thani (42:58.60).
The XCC Veteran category podium finish was taken by Hj Harun OKMD Hj Saman with 38:21.90. Zakaria Hj Bakar followed soon after with 40:13.24 and KCT’s Pg Zaman Pg Hj Matasan was third with 41:54.67.
Newcomer Mohd Al-Qayyum Hj Aini shocked the audiences by finishing first in the XCC Beginner’s category with his quick time of 24:38.06, while BCP’s Mohd Azwar Mohd Hairolrani finished second with 26:47.85 and Mohd Imanizayidi Hj Yunaidi finished third on 34:25.
In the Junior XCC category, BCP’s Mohd Aziz Abdul Aziz and Ahmad Jawaahir Hj Johor finished with 27:23.03 and 28:35.29 to come in first and second. Abdul Muiz Hj Yuzaini third on 33:03.37.
The single lap downhill race was won by Mohammad Azizi Kamal with a time of 2:31.50, Mohd Hazwan Hj Harun second with 2:34.64 and Mohd Shahnizzan Hj Tamit third with 2:35.23.
