YAFIZ Jamaludin is looking for a new crop of riders.
The national cycling coach is calling out to more enthusiasts will step forward to sign up for the Individual Men Junior (17-18 years old) and Individual Men Beginner (13-16 years old) categories of the Pehin DatoAwg Hj Yahya Cycling National competition next Sunday.
"I want to use this race to find new junior riders for the national team. I hope more riders will come forward and participate in both the categories," said Yafiz in a recent interview with The Brunei Times.
"So anyone who wants to represent the country can try it out by showing their performance at this race," he added.
"This is a good opportunity for all riders in Brunei to get into the national team. We have a lot of elite riders joining in the local race already so I can choose them to represent the country.
"Both are part of the short term and long term programme for cycling. The elite for short term while the junior and beginner for the long term," continued the Malaysian.
Organised by the Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation (BDCF) with the collaboration of the Department of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the 125-kilometre race will begin and end at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.
The other two categories to be contested are the Individual Men Open (19 years and above), and Team Men Open.
The top-three in the Individual Men Open will receive $800, $600 and $400 respectively.
The fourth place finisher will get $100 while fifth to 10th will be awarded $50 each.
The first three in the Individual Men Junior event will bag $400, $300 and $200 respectively.
Fourth place gets $50 while fifth place wins $20.
As for the newly introduced Individual Men Beginner category, the top-three will bring home $300, $200 and $100 respectively.
The cyclist to cross the line in fourth will get $30 while fifth spot finisher wins $10.
The Team Men category, where the times of the first three cyclists are used to decide the winner, offers $500, $300 and $200 to the first three teams.
Entry forms and information about rules, regulations and routes can be downloaded from BDCF'swebsite at www.bruneicycling.com.
They are also available at Triple Star (Kiulap), Awang Tum-Tum (Jerudong) and Geotrax (Lumut,Belait).
The closing date for entry is today and should be returned to the organisers at the BDCF office at theHassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
Mohd Imaadi Abd Aziz was the individual winner last year with a time of 3:13:52, ahead of Fito BandoPrilanji on 3:13:56.
G530A were crowned the overall champions of the team event after the trio of Fito (3:13.56), Muhammad Halid Sata (3:19:05) and Aiman Abdullah (3:20:54) combined for a total of 9:53:55.
